Core Values

Below is a list of our core values as educators.  These core values and their underpinnings clarify the values guiding our work.  In the right column are links to some of the work that has inspired innovation in our community.

Respect

Respect is a central component of personalized learning.  The belief in creating a respectful and dignified environment in which all students learn, every day.  We demonstrate respect for students in our steadfast belief that every student should have meaningful adult relationships that cultivate the students ability to find and explore their passions.  In order to create an environment where students feel safe, connected, and focused the professionals in the building work to build transparent, shared leadership structures that all all adults to cultivate their skill and connection to our community.

Rita Pierson (Every Child Needs a Champion)
Elmore (Instructional Rounds)
COCOA Principles (Derry Township)

Learners

We believe lifelong learning is not only an opportunity but a responsibility of educators.   Education has been slow to change and it is necessary for school communities to accept that learning occurs over time and there is a risk of failure - nobody attains mastery on the first try.
John Dewey (How We Think)

Community

Relationships are fundamental to learning.  Schools are places where children should be present, in the moment and find joy in being part of a community.  While preparing students for the future is an essential part of school allowing children to practice the skills needed not only for careers but also for being a strong community member must be a goal of schools.
Sherry Turkle (Together Alone)
Thomas Sergiovanni (Building Community)
Ken Robinson (Creativity)

Innovation

Students are entering a world in which they will require more than the ability to read, write, and do arithmetic.  Future forward education includes introducing students to the skills (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication) that will prepare them to manage rapid change and adjust to new situations.

Technology as a Learning Tool

DTSD Tech4Learning
We believe that technology has the power to transform education by allowing students unparalleled access to the resources and tools they need to learn anytime, anywhere, and at their own pace. To that end, we have made the commitment to provide every student at HHS with an iPad beginning in the 2017-18 school year.
